FAQ over crypto fraud & prevention
How do I know if my broker, intermediary, or exchange is reliable?
Only use reliable platforms such as Coinbase, Kraken, Bitvavo or Metamask, ... .
Scammers often use domain names that closely resemble those of well-known exchanges. Always carefully check the domain name and, if in doubt, consult a professional. Never invest through a platform whose authenticity you haven't fully verified.
Red flags include a lack of clear contact information on the website, the absence of correct legal information such as a company number, or a vague or nonexistent business address. Then, be sure to check the list of companies operating illegally in Belgium .
Do I have to pay a European tax to release my funds?
No. The European Union doesn't levy taxes on the release of funds, and certainly not specifically on crypto earnings. Platforms or intermediaries that ask for upfront tax payments to release your crypto are scams.
What if I receive an investment offer via social media?
Be extremely suspicious of offers via social media, WhatsApp, or Telegram. Reputable exchanges and financial institutions will never contact you unsolicited to offer investment opportunities.
How can I store my crypto safely?
Preferably store your crypto on a personal hardware wallet (such as Ledger or Trezor) instead of on exchanges. Always use two-factor authentication (2FA) and store your recovery phrases offline and in a safe place.
Under the motto "not your keys, not your coins," the safest way to store your crypto is in a personal hardware or software wallet where you control the private keys yourself. Only those who hold the keys have full control over your crypto assets.
What do I do if I think I'm a victim of crypto fraud?
Immediately stop all payments to the scammers. Also, do not pay any third parties who contact you with the promise of recovering your assets: this is often part of the same or another scam.
File a complaint with the police as soon as possible and report the incident to the FSMA (Financial Services and Markets Authority). If necessary, contact a lawyer to discuss whether and how legal proceedings can be initiated.
